What a great way to end the league season. This is the first time that this squad has beaten Sarries in the league and the 7-5 scoreline at half time AND at full time having gone behind reflects the very tight match and nervous state of the players. Make no bones about it, there were aspects of heroism in this match. A team shorn of very many A team regulars (international duty you know) manfully fronted up to a team that we have NEVER beaten in the League. (The last league match was @ U14, three years' ago and we drew 12 all.)
Heroes from 1 to 16
1. Ben. Captain America. Leading from the front and dealing with a tricky ref.
2. Harry. Revelation of the year. Play hard against a very strong pack and threw in well in a very gusty day.
3. Evan. Wow. Stepping up and playing a full match for the As. The scrum got stronger and stronger through the game.
4. Guy. Mr consistency showed some grit. Not getting into a fight was good; letting them know who was boss was even better.
5. George D. Gazelle at the lineout and very hard in the loose. Scrummaged well.
6. Sam C. Another very strong game for the As; always running hard and never late at a ruck. That fitness really shows.
7. Brandon. Hard as nails and a fantastic cover tackle in the second half when playing on the wing.
8. Sam T. This player has matured through the season and tackled tackled and tackled; rucked, rucked, rucked.
9. Greg. Fast fast fast ball. Hassle hassle hassle the oppo scrum half. One of the main reasons the oppo back line didn't get anywhere. .. Oh... and a great conversion.
10. Gautier. Assured and controlled with ball in hand.... and no-one got through him.
11. Arthur. Great hands, fantastic tackles. One half of the best two-man tackle of the day!
12. Matt. Very strong in both defence and attack. Now forming a great midfield partnership with...
13. Cookie. Most improved defensively and (mostly) kept a lid on the emotion. Very strong performance.
14. Will. Great to have him back. Awesome strength in defence... not much chance in attack, but one very nice charge through bouncing and spinning.
15. David. Good to be back at full back. Steady under high ball and finished the try very well. Dangerous with ball in hand.
16. George B. Great to have him back with the As. Was making a big difference in defence when landed on. Sorry about the collar bone and we wish you a speedy recovery.
Other good points:
Benedict and mum coming down to watch.
Former wasp (and Will's school team mate) Archie realising that he should have stayed at Wasps (... that's what I think, anyway).
Final comment:
This age group has had two years in Division 1. The first time we didn't win a match. This year we won two and lost three. Next year ..........
