League Match 1

What more do you want on a Sunny Sunday morning but to be at Twyford Avenue watching Wasps Rugby. Even better when it is the prospect of the young but strong and enterprising Colts team in their first league match of the season.

After a very narrow loss against a considerable opponent Windsor Colts in the National Cup the challenge for Wasps was to maintain the high standards and discipline they applied in that game once more.

The match took approximately 10 minutes for the opponents to test each other out and see where the pressure should be applied . Some great variation in play between the forwards and backs then started to show that Wasps were looking up for the challenge.

The first try followed some quick movement of the ball and excellent direct running by Dom to weaken the opponents defence. The forwards then drove over the line led by Daniel Lassman for first blood.

This got the Wasps hungry for more and in the next 15 minutes the 3 prop front row of Ferguson, Lassman & Eshak showed its strength dominating the scrums. As a consequence this allowed the backs to carry out some slick passing and score 2 great try’s in the corner with our enterprising fullback Max. The Wasps Captain JD also did well to convert from close to the touch line.

Following this Wasps didn’t have it all their own way and Chess Valley started to pass the ball around more confidently and with some good direct running. This led to them scoring a deserved try in the corner.

Unfortunately for Chess Valley Wasps responded swiftly to end the first half with another score. Firstly our dynamic centre Antoine broke the line to gain great field position and then via an aggressive and evasive run by Hal another try was scored and converted - Hals first try for Wasps!

So ahead of the second half Wasps now knew they had to maintain their momentum to continue their dominance in the match.

Within 5 minutes this strong Wasps team scored once more with Daniel getting his second and now on for a potential hat trick with Max.
After a series of midfield exchanges between the two teams Chess Valley began to apply some pressure leading to a line-out in the Wasps 22. However good work from the Wasps forwards led to the ball spilling to set up the try of the match. Our invigorated Scrum Half Eddie took the ball for himself and weaved himself through the forwards while ricocheting off some of their big carriers and got to the half way line. This break led to superb support play by Wasps with Pierce taking the ball on and into the oppositions 22. From this a perfect play through the backs allowed the hat trick for Max.

The dominance of Wasps was now beginning to tell on the opposition and this led to another score from a quickly taken penalty for Fez to score for his debut try. This was then rounded off by a clever kick over the rushing defence by fly half JD to score and finish the match.

Once more this team was a credit to Wasps with great team work and unselfish play.

Our next match will be against Saracens in the league.
