This was our final league fixture, having been re scheduled due to bad weather, and one we knew would be difficult, as Fullerians are the top team in division three and a home match for them, at their Watford ground.
The game kicked off at 10.45 am on soft ground, on a sunny, windy day. The conditions were perfect, apart from the strong southerly wind which blew across the pitch.
Fullerians scored within 2 minutes of kick off and again 5 minutes later, but missed their conversions due in some part to the cross wind. It was already starting to look one sided but Wasps were playing well in patches, enough to make Fullerians work. The Easter holiday rustiness was in evidence as Wasps were missing tackles and slow to get over the ball.
Our big no 8 Isaiah, then began to get into gear and thundered over the try line pushing the opposition aside. The try was drop converted brilliantly by Charlie in the absence of a kicking tee.
Fullerians came back with a third try, but Wasps responded with Isaiah smashing his way through for his second try. The game was see-sawing and to the faithful, with rose coloured glasses, it looked as if Wasps could possibly cause an upset, with a bit of luck on their side. Wasps had talent in spades, but were not performing as a team, with many players reluctant to pass, preferring to crash ball, which they either lost in the ruck or were penalised. The score at half time was 24:12 to Fullerians.
The second half followed its usual pattern for Wasps, of team disintegration, with a few individual efforts, some great tackling from a minority, but lots of mistakes and general lack of passion to win. Fullerians went on to score five more unanswered tries.
The scoreline does not tell the whole truth, as Fullerians were not scoring easy walk through tries, and in truth did not look to be a much better side. They just made the most of their opportunities and kept playing as a team for the full 50 minutes.
Fullerians end the season being league winners and Wasps were sixth, just one from the bottom.
