A Friendly Win for Wasps 19:12

Under an unexpected blue sky and shining sun we had our first game for a
while. On the paper at least, it was a friendly fixture against Old
Albanians (only on paper as we felt that tension was brewing at the time) and the
score does not truly reflect the profile of a game that could have easily
gone one side or the other. But Wasps came eventually out as the best side
with 3 tries scored, 2 converted brilliantly by Charlie, versus 2 tries, one
converted for the visitors (19-12).

Beyond the score, there are a few important lessons from this game. OA are a
very well drilled side and I must say that in several occasions, I felt they
looked more developed and composed than our side. Two key points worth
mentioning: their ability to off load more balls which reached their wingers than
with us, and their great effectiveness at the set piece; especially in rucks,
they turned many balls over due to their speed and great technique.
But despite these strengths, we won. First we should mention the great
effectiveness of our scrum. The domination was total and that¹s something to
keep nurturing and building on. So well done to all the Forwards! Second,
we have strong runners and on several occasions we sliced through their
defence, in force thanks to great footwork and thrust. That¹s where 2 of
our tries came from whilst the first one was a bit more built. Third, the
pick and go and momentum rugby seem to be part of a second nature of our
boys now. That’s great and again that’s a basis upon which we can/need to
build. Finally and that’s a great satisfaction, that’s probably the game
where I saw the least tackles missed. That says a lot about the commitment
and the spirit that animated the boys.
Whilst we rotated to allow everyone to get some game time (my apologies for
those who played very little though) we only saw one team and on the pitch
15 players bound together and playing for each other! Well done to all.

Finally, one word about our injured players: how are they doing? OT, how is
your hand? You were brave trying to stop the runner that came at you. Amari,
how do you feel after the game?
