A game played at the correct pace on a very hard pitch between two fine teams of athletes.
The early exchanges suggested that Wasps would prosper as the forwards dominated with strong carries from the likes of Chris Steve Partridge and Anthony Bull, while the backs worked the intricate ”German”playbook move to put Warrilow in for his first try, with Marc Dandois and Magnus McLeod also going over also. Time on the training ground well spent.
After the initial shock Chiswick went up a gear. A strong scrum and kicks in behind put us under pressure and finally resulted in a try. But a dominant Wasps line out kept us on top and in the opposition half, and as the Chiswick forwards tired the Wasps scrum also got on top. In the end Wasps ran out 29-10 winners. Could have been more but for some uncharacteristic handling errors and duff decisions in the backs in the last 20 minutes.
Thanks to all the regular vets players whose fitness and training paid off, and thanks to the noobs Chris Steve Partridge, Matt Crisp from the touch group, and Clyde Gordon who has been away so long I’m counting him as a noob. It was great to see you all out there.
The first over 50s game has been a long time in the making and it was sure worth the wait. Thanks to Chiswick RFC for the invitation, game, sun, beer and hospitality.
Oh, and Tony Lynch was great.
