The match saw Serge Betsen make his debut for the Legends and Mike “The Tree” Ireland mark his 70th birthday and 50 years service with a staggering kick off, that left both sides speechless and reminded us that family talent often skips a generation.
Alongside them Andy Gomarsall, Andy Reed, Damian Cronin, Fraser Waters, Ben Gotting, Jonny Barratt, Mark Denney, Rob Lozowski, Garry Holmes, Shane Roiser, Paul Volley and Peter Scrivener to name a few stunned the crowd with their youthful prowess and ageless good looks, except Scrivener, who showed flashes of skill that only his mother could applaud and culminated in awarding himself “man of the match” for the three tries he never scored.
The Isle of Man side were not without their own fortune and crossed the line whenever Norm ”boom boom” Bloom took to the field for us at centre and to be honest we were actually not sure which side he was playing for! Thankfully this was seldom and the Legends ran out eventual winners 59-24 with too many try scorers to mention but Nabs Suma did cross a number of times showing that his gas is back. Roger Uttley led the alicadoos from the side line and then on to the dance floor (Saga would have been proud), which will be increased by two next match as Olivier Garrigue and I both ruptured ACLs during stellar performances for the Black and Gold.
The Legends roll on and next year we will be helping Charities in St Agnes (Cornwall) and in Hong Kong!
