An 81 strong squad of past players from both the men’s and women’s teams arrived in St Agnes on Friday 10th May for a charity weekend to raise money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and the Wasps Legends’ chosen charity, Starlight Children’s Foundation.
On Friday evening a black tie charity dinner was held in the marquee at Enys Parc, as rugby fans got the chance to bid for sporting memorabilia in an auction and enjoyed a question and answer session, hosted by Peter Scrivener, with 2003 World Cup winners Andy Gomarsall, Joe Worsley, Josh Lewsey and Trevor Woodman.
On the Saturday, Wasps Legends Ladies took on a bruising encounter with Penryn Ladies, which saw the Wasps Legends grind out a 19 – 5 win with tries from Shelley Rae and Nic Evans.
Wasps Legends Men then took on the St Agnes Baa Baa’s, which contained some well-known local players, including former Redruth Director of Rugby, David Penberthy, and former Wasps players such as Andy Gomarsall, Serge Betsen, Will Green, Damian Cronin and Andy Reed.
Wasps Legends stormed to a resounding 65 – 26 win; even former Wasps and England World Cup winner Josh Lewsey, who lives in St Agnes, swapped shirts to play for the hosts in the second half couldn’t stop the Wasps deluge.
Peter Scrivener, Director of Rugby for Wasps Legends said: “This has been another fantastic weekend, following last year’s inaugural weekend and we are very proud to have helped raise £50,000 for the charities. These weekends are about having some fun and renewing old friendships but our main aim is to continue to help raise valuable funds for our charity.”
