After a strong lead throughout the games, the girls lost in the dying minutes. Report provided by Samantha Sherwood, womenssportuk.

On Sunday 16th November Women’s Sports UK travelled to Twyford Avenue to watch the first round of the England senior cup.

Wasps started strongly with a drive to the try line but gave away a penalty rather than taking the opportunity. They did however come back strongly with Liz Riley scoring a try on the left after some quick hands.

After some hard work at the breakdown by Lichfield they were eventually penalised and Becky Noon was sent to the sin bin for hands in the ruck. Wasps capitalised on this straight away and used the penalty to give them a line out close to the Lichfield try line. After several phases Gemma Rowland found the gap to burst through, it was converted by La Toya Mason making the score 12-0.

Lichfield responded instantly with try after a kick by fullback Nancy Stone which was well collected by Jasmine Coyne for the try. Sarah Nicholas added the conversion.

Wasps in turn responded with another strong line out drive to release back Rebecca Row, which was converted by La Toya Mason. Shortly after Lichfield’s Carys Williams was sin binned for a high tackle. Wasps continued to pressure but could not gain any extra points so the score was 19-7 at half time.

Lichfield were the dominant team in the second half and came out strongly, winning an early penalty which Sarah Nicholas scored. Lichfield continued to pile on the pressure and at the 60 minute mark Wasps’ Emilla Kristianson was yellow carded for repeated infringement at the breakdown. Sarah Nicholas of Lichfield again slotted the penalty. With less than 10 minutes to go Lichfield made a breakthrough to score a try through Karen Harris which was converted by Nancy Stone taking the score to 19-20.

Wasps pushed hard in the final ten minutes, but with Sarah Hudson in the bin they had an uphill struggle. They worked hard at the breakdown but Lichfield defended well to hold onto the slim win.
