Wasps travelled up to Lichfield RFC on Saturday to play in their RFU Senior Cup Final, against local rivals, Richmond RFC.
The game started well for Wasps, with strong phases of attack and defence being shown from the whistle. It was 15 minutes in before the first points were put on the board, courtesy of Richmond’s Alice Richardson, who kicked a penalty over the posts, putting her team 3-0 up. Some great breaks from the Wasps back line were met with solid tackles, making it difficult for the girls to get over the try line. 10 minutes before half time, Richmond scored a try from front row, Vicki Cornborough, putting the Premiership title holders up 10-0, going into half time.
Wasps started the second half with some great play from the backline, followed by a driven maul from the forwards, gaining much territory and ending up in the Richmond 22. However, Richmond managed to turn over possession, and winger, Rebecca Ball, scored under the posts, converted by Richardson, putting Richmond up 17-0.
Again, Wasps upped their game, this time managing to convert their effort into points, as Louise Meadows scored after team effort. Hannah Edwards converted narrowing the gap to ten points, 17-7 to Richmond.
With just minutes left to play, Richmond’s Oli Davies got over the line, another try putting the opposition ahead 22-7. Although Wasps kept pushing, they were unable to put any more points on the board. The final score 22-7 to Richmond, who were crowned National Cup Champions, as well as Premiership League Winners 2013/14.
Despite the loss, the whole squad have worked hard this season to be in this position and have shown determination and commitment. The 2s still have one final league game to be played, this coming Sunday, away at Reading RFC, which promises to be an exciting display of rugby.
Looking ahead to next season there is already excitement building. Over the summer, Wasps Ladies are hosting the first Wasps FC 7s tournament at Twyford Avenue, on 17th May. There will be a senior women’s invitational competition, as well as an open men’s tournament.
September marks the start of Wasps Ladies 30th Anniversary (2014/15). Celebrations and events will be held throughout the season, to celebrate 30 years of the Women’s section of the club running. The events will aim to help raise money for the Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation and support the Ladies section of the club.
