EMRU National Colts Plate: Guernsey 10 Wasps 47

Dom Benson12 Dec 2010 - 12:01

Travellers Triumph On The Longest Day

Wasps Colts won through to the 4th round of the EMRU National Colts Cup Plate competition by beating Guernsey Academy 47-10 in Guernsey yesterday.

Hugo Lewis, Griff Ferris, Oisin Patterson all scored two tries each, and Rob Paterson one, as the Colts pack dominated their plucky opponents in all areas. Alex Hodgkinson, along with controlling the game and territory, kicked 5 out of six conversions.

Travelling to and from Guernsey in a day was a tough call for the team, who all met at 7am at Gatwick airport, returning mid evening tired but victorious. It was a great trip and the spirit the game was played in and hospitality we received from our generous hosts was in the finest traditions of Rugby and a memorable fixture for all.

First, we need to thank Guernsey RUFC, and their sponsors Heritage Insurance, for their help in arranging the trip. And thanks, too, to Rob Lozowski for helping out with Heritage.

However, none of this would have been possible without a lot of hard work from a lot of people within the Colts section. First, Martin Jones, who stuck to the task of sorting out with the organisers and Guernsey how the fixture might work. Tracey Brader and Dom Benson who, in cahoots with Martin, managed to assemble a fine squad in less than 24 hours and insure the trip.

Last, but by no means least, Messer’s Boyer, Whittle, Furlong and Paterson and Ms Brader for getting up at an unearthly hour on Sunday morning to transport players to the airport, and to Messer’s Ferris and Lewis, who, having done that, decided to buy tickets and join us on the trip!

Thanks to you all as your contribution helped the boys have another memorable rugby experience at Wasps.

Footnotes:

We were fortunate to receive a bye in the last round of the Plate, having been knocked out of the National Cup competition by Petersfield in the final minute of the game.

Our hosts generously arranged our flights, without which we would not have been able to fulfil this fixture. Having got up before the crack of dawn, the team landed in time for a light brunch at a local spa before taking the field in the afternoon. In the event, our lads played well despite their lack of sleep. Wasps took the tie with some fine, flowing football and won 10-47.

Guernsey RUFC is a visionary club, having established a minis section in 1974, fully 25 years before Wasps FC. In 1996 it set up a Rugby Academy (now sponsored by RBS) and the club's youth players compete in the Hampshire leagues and against English and French clubs, so we expected a stern examination. Our generous hosts should be reassured that Wasps FC Colts is not affiliated to London Wasps RFC, despite the similarity in the names of the respective clubs!

I recommend venturing over to Guernsey RUFC's fine website for further news:

We thank Guernsey RUFC for their hospitality and now look forward to contesting round 3C of the National Plate, organised by East Midlands Rugby Union.
