Wasps too strong for Gloucester-Hartpury in development league

Wasps maintain their sensational run on form in the development league with a 45-17 win over Gloucester-Hartpury

Wasps maintain their sensational run on form in the development league with a 45-17 win over Gloucester-Hartpury. The hosts ran in seven tries after working their way into a game following a strong start from the visitors. With a brace for Katie Mason & Makeda Lewis, there was some fantastic attacking rugby on offer on the artificial surface at Grasshoppers RFC.

Wasps got off to a fast start with Caroline Flohil crossing early on, picking up her first try of the season, after racing in from 20m out. However, Gloucester hit back with two tries in quick succession from quick counter attacks.

Wasps regained the lead after a strong set piece provided an excellent attacking platform metres from the line. The ball spread wide found Katie Mason (Sponsored by Snap Sponsorship & Lions Sports Academy) who had an easy finish. Gloucester-Hartpury hit back as Kendall Dewitt scored her third of the day.

The hosts managed to secure their bonus point with two more scores before half time. The first made by an outstanding offload in a tackle from Florence Williams, who sent Kendall Templeman through a gap to score. The final score of the half saw Katie Mason weaving in and out of tackles, before putting Makeda Lewis in space down the wing.

It was a strong second half performance from the top of the table side – Makeda Lewis opened the scoring with a good step and then demonstrating her pace to race through the defence. Katie Mason (Sponsored by Snap Sponsorship & Lions Sports Academy) got her second of the day shortly afterwards, after an incredible run through the Gloucester-Hartpury defence.

Wasps dominated both sides of the ball in the second half, with a fantastic defensive effort to keep the visitors out for the entirety of the half. The final score came from Kendall Templeman running a killer line to break into the Gloucester 22m, before a great pass to find Garnet Mackinder who sealed a 45-17 win.

The victory maintains Wasps position at the top of the development league. With the second-place sides game being called off because of the weather, it begins to create a gap for Wasps as the season breaks for a few weeks during the Six Nations. They will have a tough fixture as they host Saracens as the run in begins at the start of March.
