WASPS Occys vs WASPS Nomads

A Christmas Cracker- Dads vs Lads
This just in from Ace reporter W Beausire….On Saturday 19th Dec the Occies convened for a final match of 2017. Careful fixture selection saw them take on the Nomads in a classic contest of guile vs fitness in advance of the club Christmas dinner. Nomads were a couple short of a XV so J Young spent his last match for the Occies …err….playing against the Occies, as did a couple of the Occies other star players. They were joined by L Haslam on a flying visit from NZ, who helped keep the Occies honest. And, in fact, it ended up XIV vs XIV.
Occies drew first blood, dabbing down under the posts after Nomads were penalised a couple of yards out. Nomads responded well with pace down the left and a simple run in after the threatening left wing drew the cover.
Despite Nomads youthful pace and vigour their lack of familiarity with each other led to a little bit of clunkiness in their passing in the first half. After half time, as the temperature dropped and the drizzle intensified, they focused more on kicking to the wings in an effort to tire out their ageing opponents. They reckoned without the will to win, conditioning and intensity of the Occies, who turned quickly, covered everything and had a (very) experienced full back with an uncanny ability to be in the right place. As the game wore the Nomads passing game improved, but efficient defence from the Occies left few gaps.
Final score was 22-10 to the Occies in a match played in a good spirit between two teams who one way or another were pretty familiar with each other. Great to see the players from the Nomads keeping in touch with the club, there is some great talent there and it‘s good to keep them close. Many thanks to all the lads, all the dads and especially M Tapiki and D Popper for refereeing the game with such aplomb.
