A busy weekend at Twyford Avenue saw a girls rugby development day taking place and both Ladies teams finishing with wins.

A busy weekend at Twyford Avenue kicked off this morning with the Girls Rugby Development Day, in partnership with Middlesex Rugby. Nearly 30 girls aged 13-18 turned up to take part in skills sessions and games run by the Wasps girls. This was followed by a Q&A session with some of our England players and many of the girls stayed to watch the 1s and 2s play against Aylesford and Reading.

The home side started strong against Aylesford, with some strong running and scrummaging leading to a try for number 8, Laura Quinn in the first 10 minutes. This was converted by centre, Hannah Edwards.

Wasps retained possession for much of the first half, and second row Lois Newcombe crashed over the line to put them ahead 30 minutes in. Edwards added the extras again. Aylesford worked hard, but gave away a penalty within kicking range. Hannah Edwards stepped up and put 3 more points on the board for the girls in black and gold. Half time and Wasps led 17-0.

A lengthy injury stoppage came a few minutes into the 2nd half, but the home team remained focussed, with winger Becca Rowe scoring in the corner shortly after.

Just minutes later, Lynsey Douglas also got over the line for Wasps, putting them 27-0 up.

With 5 minutes left on the clock, Rowe broke the line to score under the posts, which was converted by Edwards.

Aylesford held onto the ball for the final few minutes, and looked threatening in the 22, however, sloppy play led to a penalty for Wasps.

The ball was kicked off the field, and the final whistle was blown.

Final score: Wasps 34 – Aylesford 0

The Wasps IIs started the game strongly, with Maddie Chapman scoring early on from a sniping run down the wing; this was converted by Cerri Forster. 7-0 to Wasps.

Reading were given a chance shortly after – a high tackle on Tash Holmes led to a penalty being awarded to the visitors. Holmes took the kick and put the score at 7-3.

Mal Wanduragala scored the second try for the home side, which again, Forster coverted, 14-3 to Wasps.

Half time score – Wasps 14 – Reading 3

A further 3 tries from the girls in black and gold came in the second half. These came from full back, Anita Velinova, second row, Steph Neville and flanker, Sam Gottardi. Forster converted the first of these three; however the last two were narrowly missed.

Reading put up a good fight, however, did not stop Wasps from walking away with a 33-3 victory.

Final score: Wasps 33 – Reading 3
