Wasps welcomed Hemel to Twyford Avenue, on a cold and crisp, but blue-skied Sunday morning. Both teams had won two from four in the league, so the scene was set to decide who would move towards the upper end of the table, to challenge Ealing at season's end.

The game started quickly, with attacks on top, and the teams sharing four tries in a frenetic and exciting first 15mins. Wasps showed their intent from the off, running from their own half, making incursions into Hemel territory. This pressure eventually resulted in a penalty 10m out, whereby Jas showed heads-up initiative with a tap-and-go, and crossed the line for a well-taken score. Hemel reacted immediately, however, and showed why this would be a well-fought match, by scoring two quick-fire tries. The first Hemel try saw Wasps' exit blocked down. The second try saw Hemel execute a nice 50-22, take a speedy throw-in, and score, catching Wasps half-asleep in the process. There was no panic in the Wasps quarters. The black and gold struck back, and scored again, as Antoine intercepted a Hemel back's move, reading their pass through the center, to make it 14-10 to Wasps.

It was all Wasps until half-time, as Wasps built more pressure in the Hemel half. Alfie cut a nice direct line in attack, evading would-be tacklers and touching down beneath the sticks. The old rugby adage is that forwards win matches, and the backs determine by how much. This performance illustrated why that expression is codswallop, as the Wasps forwards and backs repeatedly combined to strong effect. Such a free-flowing move between the piano lifters and piano players saw Dan finish off a lovely move in the corner. A further try followed from a well-executed rolling maul, with Alfie winning the lineout, and Ned touching down. Half time read 33-10 to Wasps.

The second half saw attacks on top again. Highlights included strong running and leg strength from Dimi, yielding two tries. Dom notched one for the forwards, as a Wasps loop the loop scissors move took the Wasps No8 down the tramlines for a powerful surge to the line. Ollie Bonas showed great hands from the Wasps 10m, to put Pierce through for a 7-pointer. Hemel never remotely gave up, scoring three further tries of their own, with the No3 scoring from a very strong carry inside the Wasps 22.

A good day out for Wasps Colts, building on the recent friendly victory vs Ruislip, and continuing the recovery following the disappointment at Chess Valley. Ealing are next up, away from home, in 10 days time, a fitting finale for the league.
