Some matches just don’t seem to end fast enough.

Camped on your own line, putting bodies in the way of marauding forwards and fleet-footed backs, hanging on for the win, and just finishing on the right side of the scoreline…..

This match was certainly not like that. Having never played Harpenden before we didn’t know what to expect and the start was certainly flattering to the final score. The first five minutes demonstrated once again that our forwards, with the bit between their teeth, are more than a match for anyone. Sam quickly went over for a forwards try and then….

….. we were on the back foot for the rest of game. Our backs were lacking spark, the forwards were on ‘reduced intensity’ mode and we found ourselves 22-5 down with five minutes to go.

If you want a lesson in how to finish a game, then finding the on/off switch for our players would be the first key point. Someone found the switch... was it the crazy family members supporting for the first time from North America, or was it the coach who lost his voice in 'encouragement'? We like to think 'no'. Our boys can do this on their own. Suddenly Jae, Ben, Callum and Zack found themselves will ball in hand, attacking the opposition half-backs and gaining ground. Ben and Callum quickly scored and with a fantastic long-range conversion from Alfie we found ourselves within a score and no time to complete the comeback.

To quote Wario from Mario Kart – “Arghhh! I'll get you next time!"

Man of the match: Ben Weaver for showing his true colours for almost a full 50 minutes.
