This was our rescheduled league match and it was played at Ruislip RFC on a cold frosty morning, with kick off at 11 am. We had narrowly beaten Ruislip on our previous two meetings.
Everyone was buoyed up after the England win over the All Blacks on Saturday, and keen to get at the opposition. However straight from the kick off, Wasps were put under tremendous pressure and for 10 minutes could not get out of their own half, with Ruislip scoring first. Wasps then got more on the front foot and Daniel went over in the corner 5 minutes later as a result of good teamwork. The match was very even. George then raced over the line and added another 5 points to put us into the lead. Ruislip came back right at the end of the first half with a try scored from their winning scrum, to put them 12:10 in front. A real battle was raging on the field with the forwards using their physicality to full effect, no one more so than Vlad, using his strength to bulldoze through.
George scored again early in the second half to take us into the lead once more, ably converted by Charlie. Ruislip however then came back with another converted try by their unstoppable no 13. Wasps then made a huge effort, lasting 5 minutes in Ruislip’s 22, with wave after wave of recycling the ball, only for their no 13 to break away and run through our defence with some ease, despite being chased all the way by George.
This was a much improved Ruislip who were really very good. I understand they do this mid week training, which probably gave them the edge in what was a closely contested match.
We won most of our scrums and line outs, but we conceded too many penalties and turnovers. Support was sometimes a bit late at the rucks and runners were often unsupported. Wasps were understandably tired in the last 10 minutes and our tackle rate visibly fell off, allowing Ruislip to get past our defences. This said, Wasps were passing well and general ball control was very good.
