Wasps U13A V Brentwood A and Wasps U13B V Brentwood B (Friendly) at home
Sunday 07 October 2012
We were not sure what to expect as I do not think we have played Brentwood before. I had heard however that they were a tough team.
Match1: Wasps A V Brentwood A
The omens did not look good before the start. We had only 13 players and had to borrow two of their subs. They seemed to have plenty and they were good. They were much bigger physically and had apparently been training during the summer holidays and on Wednesday evenings as well as Sundays. Because we did not have a hooker it was on and offer whether the scrums were contested, and for a while they were uncontested. We started reasonably well for 5 minutes and then one try came after another against Wasps, and Brentwood were up 24 points by the end of the first half. We were no match for their quick accurate passing and running. Having said that, we were winning all our scrums, and even took a couple of theirs. We were also winning our line outs, but all too often the backs were slow in taking advantage of this and we lost possession. Our tackling was generally poor, with a couple of Wasps players proving the exception. The old maxim that the bigger they are the harder they fall is still true, but it took some courage to put theory into practice, with these very tall large boys. What we lacked was a coherent team effort, which was due to having a depleted squad with some key players missing. The second half was much better, and Wasps did get into their stride for periods of time, with George scoring a try with the able assistance of a loaned Brentwood centre, who was really good at catching the ball at pace and making a lot of ground before being stopped. A disappointing result, after our magnificent effort the previous week.
Final score: 42:05 to Brentwood
Match 2: Wasps B V Brentwood B
Wasps started well but then fell into disarray. We had some individual good performances, but generally more polish is required to get the best out of this team. Again tackling was poor with the exception of Stan who made several big hits. Too much shirt pulling and arm tugging, which did not stop the Brentwood boys. Again our squad was depleted and we borrowed one of their players when we had an injury. We conceded 28 points in the first half and 34 in the second, during which Wasps lost any momentum they had had in the first half. The referee stopped the match 5 minutes early, as it was becoming too one sided. Good play from James and our big number 3 shirt.
It was disappointing to see most of our A and B players dissipate at the end and not attend the lunch, when all the Brentwood boys were smartly dressed sitting alone in the dining room.
Final score 62: 0 to Brentwood
