This was our fifth league fixture and as with our last game, we needed a win to give us some points in division 3 of the Herts Middlesex Junior League. We have only one more fixture left to play. We had drawn against and beaten Harrow on previous meetings, and we should have been in with a chance of a win.
The game kicked off at 11am on a soggy pitch, on a bitterly cold rainy day. British winter conditions at their best. Harrow went straight into the lead with a couple of tries in the first ten minutes and although Wasps we putting up a fight, Harrow had some tall lanky lads who were causing us a lot of problems. Wasps then hit back in the fifteenth minute with a try in the corner from Alex G, created from a good run on the left wing by Mathew. At this point it looked as if we could pull something back.
However it then developed into a rout, and Wasps were on the back foot for much of the rest of the half. The boys were giving all they had, and to be fair were putting in some good tackles, but the line outs were shaky, the scrums were wobbly, and as in previous matches we were to slow to support and ruck over, with the result of too many turnovers.
I lost count of the tries, but at half time I believe the score was 24:5 to Harrow.
The second half was slightly better, but in the cold weather and the hits our boys had taken in this very physical match, Wasps became a bit ragged. A number of substitutions were made, but to no avail, and Harrow charged on scoring another three tries.
Another very disappointing game for Wasps. We were missing a number of key players and this had made a difference. Harrow however were a good and fair side and beat us on better ball skills and finding the gaps.
