We made the 35 mile drive out to Letchworth, Hertfordshire on a clear Sunday morning in good time for the 11.30 start of our third and final league match before Christmas. Letchworth had already played three league matches and lost twice, including a loss against Harrow a couple of weeks ago. This suggested we were in with a chance to pick up valuable points.
In the first half Wasps pretty much dominated the play and were unlucky not to score. Wasps were being awarded plenty of penalties and we could not complain. We were winning our scrums against a strong Letchworth pack. Line outs were a little more suspect and we gave away a couple of scrums as a result of errors. Our tackling was much better. With no score at half time, we felt the game was just about going our way.
The second half was a different story, with Wasps under pressure from the start, Letchworth scoring an early run through try, from a big no 13, which they converted. 5 minutes later, another converted try was scored by Letchworth and Wasps started to slip. The tackling became erratic and the centre of the muddy pitch, became a battlefield with Wasps sustaining a couple of injuries, although luckily the players carried on. Wasps lost too many turnovers at the rucks and mauls, the play had no fluidity or fast ball and the passing was sluggish and confused. Letchworth ran through us again for a third try. It was time to salvage some pride, and George managed to score just before the final whistle.
Wasps seemed a little out of sorts, lacking in inspiration, compared to last week. Letchworth were hospitable hosts and the play was clean, but it was a game we could have won on a good day.
