A game of two halves

Wasps U14 V Ruislip U14 B Away
Sunday 09 March 2014
This was a friendly against a Ruislip U14 B team. Talking to the other parents before the start, it was generally thought we would win this one quite easily, with plenty of good players on the bench in reserve, although we were missing big Isaiah. This was shown to be misplaced confidence.
The game kicked off at 11.30am, after an hour and a half warm up and training, on the hottest day of the year so far, on one of Ruislip’s main match pitches. Wasps started strongly in the first 5 minutes, pinning Ruislip into their 22, and pressing for the try line. Ruislip however won a penalty, and made a quick run down the length of the pitch to score. Wasps were a little shaken, and then Ruislip scored again 4 minutes later. Wasps were definitely on the back foot and struggling to contain Ruislip in open play. We were winning our scrums and line outs, but giving away penalties and turnover balls, due to holding on too long and not passing. Ruislip were much better at shipping the ball into the hands of a couple of fast backs. Isaiah did however get a good try in the 21st minute. The score at half time was 10:5 to Ruislip.
A couple of our forwards came off just before half time with injuries, and further substitutions were made at the interval, to give all the players game time. This had a big impact on our style of play in the second half, and Wasps started to take control with some fast pace from our backs, notably Bryn and Rafael. Axel gave 110% and scored early in the second half, narrowly missing another. Luke then scored three minutes later, followed by Bryn towards the end. Axel converted twice.
The forwards did a great job, but the game changed when the ball was being offloaded quickly down the line, and we out ran and side stepped the Ruislip defence, rather than trying to crash through. Ruislip came back just before the whistle with another try but it was all over by then.
After a shaky first half, Wasps found their rhythm and earned a well deserved victory

Final score: 15:24 to Wasps
