Another Win!

After a short warm-up and pre-game training, the match vs London Scottish
started at 11 am sharp. After a few minutes, Wasps opened the score but missed
the conversion. LS replied a few minutes later through a try achieved at the
end of a series of pick and go moves, and converted. Wasps were trailing
by 2 points. But then Wasps reacted. Dominated in the scrum (even though we
managed to retain the ball in some of our put-ins) and at the breakdown where
we kept losing too many balls, the team kept its composure and started to
play cohesively: the forwards fought back to retain possession as much as
possible or to delay opposition recycling, when the ball was retained or
conquered, the ball moved wide from hands to hands or chipped the opposition
defence. The most satisfactory elements of this half were 1/ we did better
at the LO than during our last game, 2/ the support running (this time many
support players were running with the ball carrier offering options and
opportunities to keep the ball alive) and 3/ all boys stepped up their
defence preventing LS to develop their game despite a skilful display at the
breakdown; several offensive were repelled a few metres from our try line. If
not mistaken we ended up the first half with 2 more tries 19-7.

We expected a strong reaction from our visitors in the second half. And they
did not disappoint. After a fourth try (converted again) by Wasps and
meaning a bonus point, LS managed to score two tries. One was disallowed but
the second attempt which came after a well played overlap on the wing,
despite a desperate tackle from the last Wasps defender. But Wasps managed
to score again for a fifth try, converted as the three previous ones by
Charlie and the score board took its final physiognomy: LS 12 (2 tries one
conversion) Wasps 33 (5 tries from Omar, Kieran among other scorers, and 4
conversions all due to the magic boot of Charlie). Despite the overall score
though, the second half saw Wasps playing less effectively. Whilst our
scrummaging was slightly better, until we had to move to uncontested due to
the loss of one of our props and the lack of qualified subs, and we competed
more effectively in the LO, our rucking remained a point of weakness while
our backs and our game overall started to lose its shape with too many
attacks from flattish positions, too many players magnetised by the
breakdown but without purpose. The defence though remained relatively solid
which allowed the team to maintain its lead.

Overall a nice victory to the 21 players who played their part in building
this success regardless of the time they spent on the pitch.

Again, congratulations to all the boys, a great and well deserved win.
