Wasps 15 hosted Beaconsfield in the first friendlies of the season running out victors in 2 close games 33-26 & 34-27

This was a great start to the season; a win for Wasps, an opportunity to try different options, and some fantastic efforts from new and old players. An early try by Beaconsfield (sleepy-headed Wasps) was quickly forgotten with two fantastic tries (Will and Omari) by the backs.

The evidence suggests that with four of the five tries coming from backs that they had things all their own way. This was certainly not the case. As the game wore on and the rain came down more and more heavily, so the backs struggled to impose their usual fluid game. Beaconsfield got back into the game with a converted try only for Wasps to pull away again with another Omari score and an Ehize rumble and long reach for the line. At this stage Wasps could have pulled away, but the second half became a stressful affair. Beaconsfield and Wasps (Archie) swapped scores again and when Beaconsfield scored near the end so the seven point margin seemed very very small. Wasps held on and will go to the training ground with some things to work on!

Mention must go to the pack for holding it together well with no subs. Zico and Ben were awesome in the scrum (after a shaky start), and Haydn hooked fantastically. Bojan had a great game in second row and was partnered by the always excellent Benedict. This was a very new back row selection and James and George R did a lot of unseen work in the tight as well as some great tackles in the loose. Ehize enjoyed being able to dictate the pick-up from number eight and his line-out work was excellent stealing a few opposition balls and generally making a (big) nuisance of himself!

The backs will have to work on getting out of first gear, but the midfield defence was excellent. Celton made a great start to his Wasps career and Hugo pushed on from last year. Will, Matthew, and George B were all played in multiple positions and were committed, tough in the tackle and demonstrate real skills with ball in hand. It is going to be interesting finding their best positions for this squad... an enviable position to be in with such all-round skill on show.

Omari, David and Archie showed real pace and directness in their play, and together with Jed have really demonstrated their own defensive skills; the team has definitely stepped up in this regard.

This team has what it takes. Let's put it together for the first league match next week against Welwyn.

Tries: Will, Omari (2), Ehize, Archie
Conversions: David (4)
