We could have been promoted last year if the Datchworth score had gone the right way.
This match was a fantastic answer to all the season's questions: Can we go through unbeaten? (One more league match to go... so we'll see). Can we win the league? (done) Can we play well and beat Datchworth (done).
Fifteen hardy souls made the trip. Approx 9 players were unavailable for one reason or another and we still had a fantastic squad. It is testimony to the strength in depth, the rotation policy, and the amazing fitness levels that our 15 could play their 20 on their first team pitch (large) in the sapping heat. (You didn't expect to hear that after the winter we've had.)
Apart from the huge score (forwards and backs working together to fantastic effect) there were many points of note.
1. Scrum. Totally dominating
2. Pod play. Far 'smarter' than usual, using the off-load to shift the point of attack.
3. Distribution. Best of the year. Fast flowing and moving between forwards and backs with effortless ease.
4. Back play. Great hands, great penetration and fantastic moves.
5. Skill and technique. This was evident all around the park. Great to see Guy and Jed have another good game in the As. Great to see Philippe play his first league match for the As and get LOTS of ball. Simply fantastic.
Training is paying off as fitness and skill levels are now a cut above anyone we have played. One more league match to go. Let's make it a clean sweep!
