15 Magnificent Wasps Win Newbury 10s Trophy for 2nd Season Running by Gordon Kennedy

Dear All,

A little more flesh on Dom’s bones.

In the pool stages

Vs Devonport Services - Lost 15-17, Competition opener from Scott Spurling and two more from Sam Stanier not enough as a well organised Devonport overcome a mistake ridden Wasps to win by one crucial conversion

Vs Newbury Stags - Won 22-0 A re-run of last year’s final is a one sided affair with four unanswered tries from Scott, Ois, Yoni and Charlie as Wasps slip into top gear.

Vs Winchester - Won 41-0 A hat-trick from Sam plus 4 other tries (apologies they came too thick and fast for me to note the scorers names) as Wasps win their group on points scored

Quarterfinal- Vs Henley - Won 22-0 Payback for our 15s defeat earlier this spring with a hat-trick from Ois Patterson and a try from Scott.

Semi Final- Vs Havant - Won 22-3 Hampshire Champs can only manage a drop goal in response to 4 Wasps tries. Ois, George, Hugo and Sam all cross the line to send Wasps into the final.

Final- vs Derby,- Won 14-0. Unbeaten for 4 seasons Derby’s hopes of finishing on a high are dashed after a tight, tense scoreless first half. Ois defies the laws of physics out running Derby’s winger and centre to break the deadlock. Championship secured by Sam Stanier skipping past the cover defence to score under the posts.

Tries Scored: 21 Conceded: 3

Points for: 136 Against: 20

We have been playing a lot of beautiful and exciting rugby lately which continued on Monday but I think what was crucial to our campaign was the way the forwards absolutely dominated their opponents. In Newbury, Havant, Henley and Derby our pack took on the four most physical sides in the competition and smashed, drove, rucked and mauled them out of the competition. All 8 forwards should be proud of the way they laid the platform for our exciting backs to romp in some great tries and in the Henley game especially smashed the opposition to such an extent that the forwards scored all of the tries. A great combination of power, aggression, pace and skill and a real pointer to how we aim to play our 15s game next year.

The backs, as ever with ball in hand were always a threat attacking from all parts of the field with subtle variation always keeping their opponents on the back foot. Again all 8 of our backs should be extremely proud of the way that they played.

Keen mathematicians amongst you will have seen 8 forwards and 8 backs mentioned and we had a squad of only 15. Well, a quick mention to Cammy ‘Mr Versatile’ Mulcaire. There cannot be many players who play Prop, 2nd Row and winger in a career never mind an afternoon. He gave his all in all positions.

Anyway our 15 heroes were

Hugo- Captained the side and lead from the front, great runs, great dummies and huge workload in the tight, rucks and mauls.

Ois- Great attacking running, scored more tries that any hooker should. That Derby winger was still scratching his head well after the game finished, but loads of work in the dark areas too.

Yoni- Beasted over for a couple of tries and a constant supply of turnover ball, bossed the contact area with seismic tackles with our other horseman of apocalypse...

Scott- Thundering runs thundering tackles, thundering rucking and mauling but also great distribution and backing up. Hobbled off the Physio’s table to play his best game in the final.

Fansu- Late call up with Jack Haddow sidelined. Won the lineout all game distributed well and worked tirelessly in the loose, until a hip injury cut short his afternoon.

Lewis- Constantly came off the bench and threw himself into the fray. Aggressive and thorny all afternoon, kept the ball churning back to the backs.

Alex C- Gained in confidence throughout the tournament. Had to step up to start when Fansu injured and played his best game in the final. Disruptive in the lineout and penetrating runs all helping the Wasps cause.

Cammy- fast and strong always made an impact up front. Big tackles and loads of pressure forcing the opposition into mistakes.

Sam-Electric pace and mesmeric running all day. Bamboozled opponents but also distributed well to the backs and always seemed to be there when an opponent kicked through. Drop kicked many conversions, scored even more tries. Fantastic performance.

George- Ran the line beautifully. Heads up rugby at its best. Always seemed to have time. Subtle variations all day kept opponents on the back foot and Wasps scoring tries.

Charlie- Our third Apocalyptic Horseman. Big hits and rampaging runs in the middle of the park always kept more than one opponent occupied whilst linking well all day with...

Roscoe- Fast feet fast brain never let opponents near him. Distributed well and always looked to keep the ball moving. Strong in defence- both centres turned over almost as much ball as the forwards.

Josh- Took his few free running opportunities well. Always tried to keep the ball alive and was always on top of the one on one challenge out in the wide areas. Great to see him back after injury

Hodgy- Continued George's good work at stand off. Linking the pack and the backs to maximum effect and immense in defence and squeezing the opposition into mistakes.

Phil- Continued his excellent late season form. Always sniping around the fringes and exploiting gaps. In defence never letting his opposition scrum half off the hook thus starving their backs of quality ball.

Cammy- Threatening with the ball in hand and saved several scores out pacing opposition wingers chasing kick throughs.

Jacques- Lastly a word for Jacques who travelled with us as a non playing reserve in case we had any no shows or pre-tournament injuries. A thankless and frustrating task which he carried out without complaint and supported the team throughout. Our thanks to him.

The platform for this victory was laid in the 10s training sessions we had and The Cobham 10s competition. Everyone involved in the training and at Cobham played a part and should take real pride in this victory. So to all of the players and parents involved, many thanks for your commitment to the team over the past few weeks. Your involvement was crucial and much appreciated.

Just checked and there are some marvellous pics on the website now.

We will be emailing everyone over the next couple of weeks with an assessment of the season, what went wrong and what went right and where we think everyone, as individuals can improve and what they could look to work on over the summer.

I would very much like to hear your thoughts on the season too. ALL comments gratefully received.

Good luck in the GCSEs, (AS levels for all team smartboys) and whatever Lycée exams are coming up (Je vous prie d'excuser mon ignorance. Je suis écossais).

Best wishes

Gordon
