Play Senior Men's Rugby at Wasps FC 2009/2010

We are currently registering players for the 2009/2010 season. We will be fielding two regular sides and, from time to time, a social/occasionals 15.

Our 1st team will be playing in the Herts/Middlesex league 1 next season, and our doors are open to all players who are keen to play at this level. To be considered for selection, players will have to train regularly (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and play to a suitable standard. Other clubs in this league include Saracens and Harlequins amateurs.

The 2nd team will be playing in the Middlesex Merit table. It’s a great competition, formally organised but with less formal registration requirements, and gives players the chance to play against teams throughout West London. We are particularly keen to meet young players looking for experience at senior level, or perhaps players who are returning to London from abroad or University. It’s also the team for older players, looking for less competitive rugby.

Depending on numbers and appetite, we’ll also be fielding an occasionals/vets team for “friendly” matches.

Matches begin on 12th September.

We are also keen to hear from local sportsmen who might be new to rugby but who would like to discover this sport.

Longer term, the club has ambitions to play competitively in the London leagues. We aim to be fielding many sides on Saturdays, as the club used to do in the past.

Registration: Players who wish to play matches have to be registered with the club. The cost for next season will be aprox £100 per player for the season. (Final cost to be announced end July). Every registered player will get matches, providing that they train regularly. Match selection will be based as much on commitment to the team and club, as strength as a player.

Training: We train and play all of our home matches at Twyford Avenue Sports ground, in Acton, which we share with our professional cousins, London Wasps. We have 6 quality pitches, good changing facilities and our club house is open on training and match days, as well as for big sports events. We train every Tuesday and Thursday starting 21st July 2009.

Tours: We traditionally arrange tours at the end of the season, to which all players (and non-players) are welcome.

International tickets: All registered players will be eligible to apply for tickets at all matches at Twickenham. The club receives an allotment and you have a good chance of getting tickets if you apply.

Prospects at Wasps FC: The club would like to get back to the days when we were turning out many regular sides of different abilities each weekend. Moving up to Middlesex/Herts League 1 is an important step in getting to the London Leagues and we will be inviting specialist coaches to help at training. The club will also consider paying coach course fees and regularly provides referee training for members.

Coaching: The club has a huge junior and youth section, with over 50 level 1 and level 2 coaches. The senior teams will be coached by level 2 and 3 coaches this season. There will be occasional guest coaches participating on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also, if you are a committed player, the club will consider contributing to your attendance on coaching courses, leading to qualification.

What next? If you want to be part of our club, and to play next year, even occasionally, please send your details to Richard Green at wasps@london.com It would be useful if you could indicate your preferred position and experience. Light pre-season training starts on July 21st, full training towards the end of August, and we hope to be at full strength by early September.

We look forward to seeing you.
