Wasps Colts opened their 2011 Development League account with a win but the scoreline flattered their opponents and could have been so much more.

Playing with a tricky breeze in the first half, Wasps shifted up through the gears and once in possession put the structure on the game they had been striving to do - moving up the field with forwards and backs recycling the ball through the phases. A short penalty took the side to the Finchley line where stand in scrum half, Nathan Flynn, squirmed over the line for the opening try.

Straight back on the offensive Wasps were back in the Finchley half with Alex C and James K rampaging up the field. Pressure told and Flynn rewarded the side with 3 points from a penalty kick.

Next up Max out-rampaged them all with a break from a maul on the halfway line, through two tackles, a pile driver hand off and he was off charging 40 metres to touch down under the posts for the try of the match.

Cruising to a commanding 1st half lead wasps then undid a bit of their good work with a suicidal passing move inside their own 22. In the conditions the ball went to ground and the Finchley backs pounced to go in at half time 5 fewer in arrears, 5-17.

The second half started scrappily for Wasps with silly mistakes giving Finchley more and more confidence. Camped on the Wasps line eventually the dam broke and Finchley were back in the game. Wasps rose to the challenge and roared back into the Finchley half and, once again, Max kept the improving Finchley at arm’s length with another rampaging drive from 20 metres out crossing the line with half of Finchley on his back.

Another try, having capitalised on more Wasps mistakes and patchy defence made it an uncomfortable last 10 minutes for the visitors eventually closing out the game with some tough gritty possession rugby.

Final score: Finchley 15 Wasps 24.

Two things really pleasing about the match today. Number one, the first half where you played the rugby we have all been working so hard to create. Recycling possession, going through the phases, tying defences before setting the dangerous backs free out in the open space. It was just great and a huge improvement on the first match, so well done to everyone for their contribution. Number two was the attitude of the players after the match. We had won our first league match but everyone was disappointed... we knew we had left 20 or maybe 30 points out on the pitch today and your attitude showed that you are hungry to improve and that just winning is not good enough. Fantastic.

I will send through individual coaching points for Jack to circulate later.

Lastly a huge thank you to all the parents who helped with the transport and came along and supported the team. We have a home match next week so I look forward to seeing even more of you then. Your support and encouragement is really appreciated. Thank you.
