Kilburn 10 Wasps U18s 31 Match report by Gordon Kennedy

A 23 man squad turned up a Gladstone Park for Wasps first competitive outing of the season against local rivals Kilburn. A tight first half saw some might hits as both sets of forwards looked to knock the preseason cobwebs off each other. The deadlock was broken by an exceptional tackle breaking run in from John Sperling, that nearly brought the posts down! and great backing up from Jemel Harriman to round off a sweeping move which saw Wasps turn round one try up 14-5. Second half scrum half Andy Albous sniped his way through the fringes to dart over for an early try. Tanguy Matta stopped Kilburn getting back into the game with a magnificent steal of the ball over our line! A bruising run by Sonny Suka who crossed the line after two pile driver hand offs pushed wasps clear before Kilburn got one back and then in the move of the match Dan Procter, John Sperling and James Magee combined in a beautiful move up the wing for John to cross for his second score. Final tally Kilburn 10 Wasps 31

Coaches report.

Positives

Loads of positives to come out of this first match. First thank you for all turning up, please let’s keep the numbers up it was a tremendous effort to get a full squad out so thank you all and Martin and Richard for organising so well.

The game was great to watch played in a good spirit and we are developing a fine brand of fast attacking sweeping breaks up the field with some brutal and aggressive defence. A very good start, and well done Nick Rebuffa, Andy and Dan for marshaling so well and to the whole squad for playing to the pattern. The blind side opened up as predicted in the second half and we used well. The line out worked well so well done lifters and Ferris Shaw and Dom Keene for winning our ball well and making their ball scrappy at best. The back line looked dangerous and penetrative all day, keeping the first phase close to the forwards and then running out wide so well done Dan, Daniel, Sonny and Fabrice Lavenir and all the wingers ran and tackled well all day.

Things to work on.

Rucking and Mauling. We want a fast rucking game but we lost too many turn over balls, partly because the support was 2 meters off the pace and secondly because we got greedy in contact and tried to make too much ground and present the ball well, and in defence at rucks know when to go in and when to stand off. Last line of defence, helping out the full back and the back three. We were isolated too often. Scrummaging, had no practice so far this year… we need some. All very fixable and most a matter of organisation.

Last thoughts

A huge thank you to everyone who played for Kilburn. We will have fixtures like that this year but it meant we had a proper game, enjoyed ourselves and developed as a team, so thank for doing it and for doing with such a great attitude. Thank you to our new coach Dan who is helping the backs massively. Loads to work on but a great start. See you Sunday
