We're finding out a little more about some of our players on International Women's Day - We're starting off with Liz Crake

What is your role at the club?
I play in the back row, mostly number eight this season. I joined Wasps in my first year of university in 2014, so am now onto my sixth season with the club. I currently live a long way from London, but couldn't bear to change clubs so I leave work early to make the 2.5-hour trek to training once a week and keep up with extra fitness closer to home.

What is your job outside of rugby?
I qualified as a Dentist in 2018 after five years at university, so have just started my first proper job down in the South West. I have to complete a foundation year in the NHS after qualifying, which is why I moved to Somerset. Next year I am planning on heading back a little bit closer to Twyford Avenue so I can return to full training!

What is your best rugby memory?
It would probably be a toss-up between scoring a hat-trick at the Ricoh or scoring against Canada for the England National Academy; both of which are from this season - clearly my memory doesn't extend very far back in time!

What is your favourite thing about being part of Wasps?
It's such a family environment, there's so much support for one another, not just on the field and at training, but off the field too. Even when you're competing for shirts it's still supportive. I remember in my first few seasons we had strength & conditioning and two fellow back row players, Nic Smith and an ex player Jo, used to do extra fitness on Clapham common. I distinctly remember them saying things like “if you want one of our shirts, you're going to have to work hard for it” and it spurred me on to work much harder. That just really represents to me what Wasps are about, and is a major reason why I have been at the club for so long.

What piece of advice would you give girls starting out their rugby journeys?
Find a team environment that you love and enjoy being a part of, because they're the ones that you'll play hard for and whether you win or lose you will enjoy it regardless. It's also a sport that includes every type of player so don't be afraid to start.
