Wasps FC Ladies defeated by Harlequins Women in 1st Round of Play-offs

The Tyrrells Premier 15s semi-finals commenced at Twyford Avenue where Wasps FC Ladies took on Harlequins Women. Battling to the last minute, Harlequins secured the win over Wasps FC Ladies with a final score of 19-25.

The game got off to a quick start in Wasps’ favour with Wasps no. 7, Liz Crake, putting the first points on the board with a try under the posts, converted by no. 14 Abby Dow. Harlequins were quick to retaliate, scoring two tries in the next 5 - the first from Abbie Scott and then from Deborah McCormack. Neither try converted, Harlequins sat three points up.

Eager to increase their lead, Harlequins fought to disrupt Wasps’ attacking play. Harlequins Fi Pocock ran away with an intercept from the 22 only to be chased down by Wasps fullback Danielle Waterman with a tremendous tackle to stop her just on the 5m. However, errors at the breakdown saw Wasps carded and a man down on the 5m. Taking advantage, Harlequins played fast and Natasha Bradshaw ran in their third try taking the score to 7-17 after a successful conversion by Ellie Green.

Wasps started the second half strong. Just 6 minutes in and playing to their structures, no. 10 Louise Dodd bolted through Harlequins defence over the try line. A successful conversion took the score to 14-17. Wasps continued to punish Harlequins’ defence, a penalty scrum in the 54th minute allowing them to take play inside the 22. As their pack inched forwards inside the 5m, the vision of Sammy Wong spread it wide and out to Abby Dow who snuck in Wasps’ third try of the game to put them in front 19-17.

In the last 10 minutes of the game, with play in Wasps 22, Harlequins increased their score. After a succession of scrums, and a penalty in Harlequins favour, they went for sticks to put them one point ahead. Then, in the final minute of play, despite a ruthless Wasps defence, Fi Pocock found ran over the line in the corner to end the game 19-25.

The second round of Semi-finals is set to take place at Twickenham Stoop next Saturday at 3pm. With a 6-point difference all is to play for as Wasps go in search of that sting with a chance of a place in the finals.
